Who should get a pap smear?

All women 18 and older should have an annual pelvic exam and PAP smear. Women under 18 who have had or are currently having intercourse should also begin annual exams and pap smears.

What questions will be asked?

The health care provider will inquire about

  • your sexual history
  • your general health
  • any symptoms troubling you
  • any irregularities in your menstrual cycle
  • any suspicions of pregnancy
  • any infection concerns

This is also a good time to discuss childbearing plans and contraceptive options if needed!

What preparation is needed before an exam?

36 hours before the exam don't use

  • douches
  • vaginal medications
  • lubricant
  • tampons
  • a diaphragm or cervical cap

Avoid vaginal intercourse for 48 hours before the exam!
Peeing just before the exam will make you more comfortable when pressure is applied to your abdomen!
