Girl Scouts Uniquely Me! and College 101 Programs

We are currently working with Hemlock Girl Scout Council in our area to host two studio 2B programs for this coming Fall 2006. We will be hosting a College 101 program and also a Uniquely Me! Inside and Out program in which we will cover the information presented in the corresponding Focus Books. These programs will help the girls earn their studio 2B charms.

Passionately Pink for the Cure

This is a new program from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. WomenSpeak will be hosting SU's own Passionately Pink Day on Friday October 27th. It will be taking the place of Lee National Denim Day which WomenSpeak used to participate in. Below is a small excerpt from the Komen Foundation website on their hopes for Passionately Pink:

Passionately Pink for the Cure™ is a new, year-round fundraising and education program kicking off October 1, 2006, in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The program encourages companies, schools and organizations to take that promise, make it their own, and make a difference by supporting breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.

Breast cancer touches millions of lives. It is expected that 211,200 women and 1,720 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and more than 41,000 people will die from breast cancer in 2006 alone. One by one, we can make a difference! Passionately Pink for the Cure™ is an easy, creative program we hope will have everyone seeing pink everywhere you look, every day in October, encouraging millions of people nationwide to get involved in the promise for the cure. We hope to raise $10 million through the Passionately Pink for the Cure™ program with your help.

The Vagina Monologues

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop worldwide violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.
V-Day stages large-scale benefits and produces innovative gatherings, films and campaigns to educate and change social attitudes towards violence against women. Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities.

Performance is just the beginning. In Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, V-Day commits ongoing support to build movements and anti-violence networks. Working with local organizations, V-Day provided hard-won funding that helped open the first shelters for women in Egypt and Iraq, sponsored annual workshops and three national campaigns in Afghanistan, convened the "Confronting Violence" conference of South Asian women leaders, and donated satellite-phones to Afghan women to keep lines of communication open and action plans moving forward.

The V-Day movement is growing at a rapid pace throughout the world, in 81 countries to date. V-Day, a non-profit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day was named one of Worth Magazine's "100 Best Charities." In eight years, the V-Day movement has raised over $30 million.  The 'V' in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina.

Clothesline Project

Held during the first semester, this project begins in the residence halls and ends at TBTN. During our hall programs, every student can participate by painting a t-shirt with a message or design promoting a stance against violence, sexual assault or rape. The t-shirts are displayed in Mellon Lounge in the fall and then again during TBTN.

Love Your Body Day

Love Your Body Day is celebrated on campus in September in conjunction with the national event of the same name. In 2002, WomenSpeak was joined by the SPARC, Gay-Straight Alliance, Sigma Alpha Iota, The Sisterhood, the Student Association for Cultural Awareness, Students Promoting Eating Disorder Awareness, and Zeta Tau Alpha in promoting awareness about health, self-esteem, and body image issues. Check out the LYBD article featured in the Crusader.

Health Fairs

In conjunction with the Health Center, WomenSpeak joins campus and community organizations to promote health awareness at the Health Fair in Mellon Lounge. This spring, WomenSpeak provided information on PAP tests and other sexual health measures and concerns.

Conferences, Rallies, and Expos

Members of WomenSpeak participate in various conferences and expos throughout the year to find out what more we can do to help the welfare of women beyond campus. Most recently, members joined representatives from SVWIT at the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape's rally at the state capitol on April 9, 2003. Speakers from the legislature, Men Against Sexual Violence, survivors of assault, social workers, and many performers and passionate individuals. In the past, WomenSpeak members have attended the Columbia-Montour Women's Conference, as well as national NOW conferences.

Susquehanna Valley Women in Transition

SVWIT aids individuals and their children in need of sheltering and counseling to escape abusive domestic relationships in Snyder, Union, and Northumberland Counties. WomenSpeak collects funds and nonperishable food items for SVWIT with a variety of fundraising events. In the fall of 2001, we collected canned goods and money with the first Haunted Avenue, in which many on-campus organizations participated. Spring of 2002 brought our highly successful first concert fundraiser, which featured singer/songwriter Doria Roberts and girl rockers Antigone Rising. WomenSpeak also donates meals for those living in the shelter.

Haven Ministries

Haven Ministries is a local privately-run shelter for individuals families that are escaping abuse. As with SVWIT, we donate dinners for the people staying at Haven.

Take Back the Night

We hold an annual rally in April to unite the campus and community against domestic and sexual violence. The evening includes speakers, testimonials by survivors, musical performers, and a candlelight vigil.
