For many business students, summer means continued learning, with the offices of major companies replacing traditional classrooms.

This summer marks junior James Norman’s third internship with Moody’s Investors Service, a “Big Three” credit rating agency. Currently a treasury intern, the accounting major from Bronx, N.Y., is creating a process to monitor global bank fees and a system to track intercompany transactions.

Norman’s experience builds on previous summers, as his responsibilities grow more complex and relationships grow stronger.

“SU’s Career Development Center allowed me to brush up on my soft and hard skills alike so that I can be successful at keeping those relationships and performing at a high level,” he says.

John Martone, a senior accounting major from Glen Cove, N.Y., also knows the importance of relationships. His advisor, Associate Professor of Accounting Jerry Habegger, connected him with an alumnus who directed him towards PricewaterhouseCooper’s recruiting department. Now Martone interns with their office in Manhattan, assisting with corporate tax returns and research into potential clients.

Martone uses accounting principles learned at Susquehanna, as well as Word and Excel abilities. “One of the most important classes I’ve ever taken was Using Computers freshman year,” Martone remarks.

Cesaltina Fernandes ’17, a business administration-finance and economics major from Elizabeth, N.J., is interning in Prudential’s Group Insurance Finance - Expense Management department. Among her Prudential colleagues, she has observed how “meaningful relationships” and “symbiotic sharing of experiences” lead to success.

“Networking is the most useful non-technical tool that any business professional should have,” Fernandes says. In addition to growing her network, Fernandes hopes to gain perspective on the industry, particularly about future problems facing Group Insurance.

Norman, Martone, and Fernandes represent only a few students spending their summers in promising business internships. Others include Colin Keyes ’17 at JP Morgan Chase & Co., Evan Marquis ’17 at Liberty Mutual Insurance, and Jacqueline Bauer ’18 at New York Life.
