An Africana Studies minor may not have much in common with his sports media major, but that’s fine with Jahmir Wilson ’20.

“I mainly decided to add the Africana Studies minor because of my interest in the topics of many of the different courses, as well as loving the professors teaching these classes,” says Wilson, who also minors in philosophy.

“Having thought-provoking classes will make me a more well-rounded individual going into the future,” he adds.

One of those courses was Aesthetics, taught by Michael Thomas, assistant professor philosophy and director of the Africana Studies program. The course looks at how artistic and aesthetic values are reflected in modern and historical philosophies of art and beauty.

“We really had to analyze the information presented to us to understand it, and Dr. Thomas also challenged students to engage in critical discussion,” Wilson says.

Wilson decided to attend Susquehanna because he liked the friendly atmosphere on campus. He is still formulating his career plans but knows that his future will include athletics in some way.

He is vice president of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, a student worker in the Center for Diversity & Inclusion and the sports information office, an intramural referee and a member of several other student organizations.
