Three faculty members were honored with awards during Susquehanna University's 157th commencement ceremony held Sunday, May 10.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Swarna Basu received the John C. Horn Distinguished Service Lectureship Award. The award memorializes a former longtime member and chair of Susquehanna University's Board of Directors and recognizes a faculty member for outstanding scholarship and conscientious service to the university. Basu earned his doctorate from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., and joined Susquehanna in 2005. As a recipient of the award, Basu will present a public lecture during the 2015-16 academic year.

Associate Professor of Art and Department Chair Mark Fertig received the Susquehanna University Teaching Award. Fertig earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tenn., and came to Susquehanna in 2002.

Associate Professor of Biology Tom Peeler received the Distinguished Academic Advising Award. The award recognizes the important role students' academic advisors have in students' academic experiences and outcomes. Peeler earned his doctoral degree from Duke University, Durham, N.C., and has been at Susquehanna since 1990.

The Horn award is determined by open nominations from the faculty. The Teaching Award is determined by nominations from faculty and also the Student Government Association. The Advising Award is determined by nominations from faculty, staff and students. All awards receive confirmation from University President L. Jay Lemons.
