English Program Provided Graduate with Foundation for Success
Madeline Distasio

February 13, 2017

Madeline Distasio '14 reflects on her experience as an English major:

"Since declaring my English major at Susquehanna back in 2010, I've worked as a journalist, a social media coordinator and an editor for brands across the editorial spectrum—from fashion publications, to viral aggregators, to global development nonprofits. In my experience, hiring managers are enthusiastic about candidates with a strong academic background in English.

"In my four years at Susquehanna, I sharpened my critical lenses, developed my writing chops and honed my research skills. The ability to apply a critical perspective and to communicate effectively are valuable skills that any employer, whether a marketing lead or a managing editor, can appreciate.

"The GO Program also had a profound impact on my world view and career goals. After spending a semester abroad in London, I decided to go back to the U.K. for graduate work in journalism after leaving Susquehanna. The first year out of college is nerve-wracking, but my semester abroad gave me the confidence to tackle it 4,000 miles from home. I credit my overall resilience to that program, and I credit the professional success I've found since graduation to my English studies at Susquehanna."
