March brings theatre productions, a gallery opening, a visiting writer and more to Susquehanna University’s campus.

The following events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Second Stage to Present Crumbs from the Table of Joy

Susquehanna’s Second Stage will present Crumbs from the Table of Joy, by Lynn Nottage, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 through March 2 and 2:30 p.m. March 3 in the Degenstein Center Theater.

Crumbs from the Table of Joy sees racial and social issues explode as the backdrop of this powerful story about family bonds and conflict. The Second Stage features a collection of mostly student-generated productions focusing on bare-bones performances of challenging works in unconventional spaces.

The Degenstein Center Theater is in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for non-SU students and senior citizens. For tickets and information, call the box office at 570-372-ARTS (2787).

Tickets Still Available for Kathleen Turner Event

Fresh off her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, acclaimed actress Kathleen Turner will be at Susquehanna University Sunday, March 3, to discuss her remarkable screen and stage career with University President Jonathan Green. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Degenstein Center Theater.

Turner’s appearance, made possible by The Dr. Bruce L. Nary Theatre Guest Artist Fund, is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and limited to two per customer. Tickets will be available Jan. 21 and must be picked up in advance at the Susquehanna University Box Office, located in the theater lobby. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Turner is known for her candidness in interviews. She has spoken openly about the double standard women face when aging in Hollywood. She has also been forthcoming about living with painful rheumatoid arthritis.

Aminatta Forna to Present Reading

Author Aminatta Forna will deliver a reading of her works at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in Weber Chapel Auditorium.

Forna is the award-winning author of four novels, Happiness, The Hired Man, The Memory of Love and Ancestor Stones, and the critically acclaimed memoir The Devil That Danced on the Water.

Her fiction has won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best Book Award and the PEN Hurston/Wright Legacy Award; has been shortlisted for the Neustadt Prize, the Orange Prize for Fiction, the IMPAC Award and the Warwick Prize; and nominated for the European Prize for Fiction. Her memoir was serialized on BBC Radio and in The Sunday Times newspaper.

Russian National Ballet to Perform Romeo and Juliet and Carmen

The Russian National Ballet will present their productions of Romeo and Juliet and Carmen at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in the Degenstein Center Theater. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $5 for non-SU students.

The Russian National Ballet was founded in Moscow in the late 1980s, when many of the great Soviet dancers and choreographers were exercising their new-found creative freedom. Today, the Russian National Ballet features more than 50 experienced dancers, many of whom have been with the company since its inception.

Darshak Patel to Give Lecture

Darshak Patel, senior lecturer of economics and director of undergraduate studies at the University of Kentucky Gatton College of Business and Economics, will present a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, in Isaacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall.

The lecture is titled Low-Cost Incentives: Lessons From Students, Workers and Sports.

As an educator, Patel seeks to increase engagement, promote active learning and help students fulfill their highest potential.

Second Stage to Present Caius and Quid

Susquehanna’s Second Stage will present Caius and Quid, by junior theatre studies major Steven McKnight, of South Abington Township, Pa., at 7:30 p.m. March 22-23 in Isaacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall.

Caius and Quid is a clever existentialist romp about revolution, commitment and human relationships.

Art Gallery to Showcase Work from Susquehanna Seniors

An opening reception from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, March 23, will celebrate the annual exhibition of work by senior graphic design and studio art majors in the Lore Degenstein Gallery.

The exhibition continues through April 7.

Second Stage to Present Broadway Cabaret

Susquehanna’s Second Stage will present Broadway Cabaret at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 30, in Isaa’s Auditorium, Seibert Hall.

Broadway Cabaret is a themed evening of musical entertainment and movement drawn from contemporary Broadway hits and classic musical theater material.
