New Teacher Education the Topic of Annual Horn Lecture

Valerie Allison, associate professor of education at Susquehanna University, will deliver the annual John C. Horn Lecture on March 23.

The lecture, Self-Study and Storytelling: Tools for Personal Awareness, Disrupting Assumptions about the "Other" and Informing Teacher Education, begins at 4:15 p.m. in Isaacs Auditorium of Seibert Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

Allison has used the self-study of her lived experiences as instructional tools for raising the consciousness of preservice teachers to the life circumstances of their students. In her presentation, Allison will explore the impact of her storytelling on her own fluid personal and professional identities, on her goal to disrupt the expectations preservice teachers might have for some of their future students and on her efforts to inform the broader context of teacher education.

Topics of Allison's research include the education and treatment of children with different learning needs, poverty and school failure, depression and suicide, and childhood sexual abuse.

Allison is the recipient of the 2016 John C. Horn Distinguished Service Award, given annually to a faculty member for outstanding scholarship and service who, in turn, presents a public lecture in recognition of the honor. The award was established in 1979 by the university's board of directors to honor the late John C. Horn, who served as board chair from 1962 to 1978.   

Allison earned her bachelor's degree in 1987 from Westminster College of Salt Lake City. She went on to earn her M.Ed. in action research from the University of Utah in 1998 and received her Ph.D. in philosophy in teaching and learning in 2006 from the same university.
