When communications major Rachel Jenkins '16, of Camp Hill, Pa., embarked upon her Global Opportunities (GO) trip to Australia, she likely didn't realize that she would parlay it into an online internship and potential career.
Facing a light course load in her final fall semester, Jenkins began looking for additional opportunities to challenge herself and build her résumé while on campus.
"I spent a few weeks at the beginning of the semester researching and applying for virtual internships and The College Tourist turned out to be the best fit for me," Jenkins said.
The College Tourist is an online community for study abroad and student travelers written by college students around the world. Two of Jenkins' travel pieces on Australia and Malaysia, originally published by The College Tourist, were picked up by The Huffington Post and USA Today, respectively.
Both pieces were based off of Jenkins' own experiences abroad through Susquehanna's GO program.
"I spent a semester in Gold Coast, Australia," Jenkins said. "While I was there, I road tripped around the south island of New Zealand and went to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia."
During her internship, Jenkins' responsibilities included creating and submitting articles twice a month about various travel destinations, contributing to group articles once a week, participating in various social media events such as Twitter chats and theme days on Instagram.
She said the experience opened her mind to the appeal of travel writing. Post-graduation, Jenkins was pursuing various employment options.
"I did not plan on using my GO experience for travel writing or future internships, but I've always loved traveling, and I think it just naturally progressed into something I fell in love with," Jenkins said. "The next place I want to travel to is Iceland!"
