More Funds Raised to Fight Throat Cancer

Tyler Hoagland '19 wanted to take the fundraising effort started by Steven Weidlich '17 a step or two farther.

After head basketball coach Frank Marcinek was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2016, Weidlich and his teammates raised funds and awareness for the fight against the disease. The team sold wristbands and donated all of the money raised to the Throat Cancer Association.

Hoagland took that effort a step further this season and worked with Director of Athletic Communications Kelly Vergin and Sire Advertising in Selinsgrove to design a tie, with a "Tie Up Throat Cancer" logo, to be sold to basketball coaches and anyone else who wanted to support the cause. The hope was that coaches would purchase the ties and wear them on the same day that they took part in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Suits and Sneakers event in February.

All of the profits from the sales were donated to the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer program started by the NABC.

Hoagland, a junior point guard for the River Hawks, and the rest of the team were inspired by the courage and determination that Marcinek showed as he endured the treatments in his successful fight against throat cancer. The Tie Up Throat Cancer campaign is ongoing and will continue into next basketball season.
