David B. Miller '17: On the London Program in Bahrain
Susquehanna's Global Opportunities (GO) program is a unique quality that distinguishes the college from other liberal arts schools. For my GO trip, I was accepted into the Sigmund Weis School of Business London Program. It's a challenging 18-credit academic schedule requiring classes, theatre productions and weekly field trips to European businesses, including U.K. giants such as the BBC and Wimbledon. These tours showed the application of business principles in a way that a traditional classroom setting cannot.
The most interesting of these field trips took us beyond Europe and into the heart of the Middle East, where we visited the island nation of Bahrain. Hosted by Tim Murray '93, CEO of Aluminum Bahrain (Alba), we toured Alba's aluminum processing facilities, and in the process, learned about industrial business concepts.
Our group was able to network with successful executives who offered career advice and strategies for leveraging our experiences abroad with potential employers. It helped me better understand globalization. In central Pennsylvania, these business fundamentals can be taught, but this kind of kinesthetic learning is what makes our school a fantastic educational institution.
The Bahrain trip is truly a feather in the cap of any business major. It exposed us to a part of the world few Americans have heard of, let alone visited. Our group had several discussions about how the trip helped us develop new insights on conducting business overseas.
Chief executives represent the pinnacle of hard work and professionalism, and to meet a CEO whose alma mater matches mine is truly inspirational. The Bahrain trip gave me even more confidence in my education, and opened my eyes to a part of the world that I would otherwise be blind to.
