Susquehanna University senior Steven Weidlich has been selected as one of the five winners of the 2017 Allstate Good Works Team for NCAA Division II, III and NAIA Men's Basketball players.
The Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams are each composed of 10 student-athletes-five from NCAA® Division I, and five from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. Weidlich was chosen from among 278 total nominations made by sports information directors and coaches at colleges and universities from across the country.
Weidlich leads the Susquehanna River Hawks and the Landmark Conference in scoring with 21.0 points per game and is also among the team leaders in rebounds, assists, steals and shooting percentage.
"He's a dynamite student, 3.8 GPA, very involved in the community," Head Coach Frank Marcinek said. "He's going to finish as one of the school's all-time leading scorers."
The senior finance major is also a leader in the community.
Weidlich helps those less fortunate via food drives, working in soup kitchens, accompanying those with mental disabilities to Catholic Mass weekly and reading to elementary students.
Weidlich's community service became personal last spring when Marcinek was diagnosed with throat cancer. Weidlich started a bracelet campaign to raise awareness around the community and campus regarding throat cancer. Funds raised through the effort were donated to the Throat Cancer Foundation.
As of December, Marcinek is cancer-free. "It was meaningful to me," Marcinek said. "He brought attention to a different kind of cancer."
Weidlich will be honored at a banquet at the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament Final Four in Phoenix, Ariz., in April.
