Days the university is closed during the 2016-17 academic year:
- Day before Thanksgiving (half day)-Wednesday, Nov. 23
- Thanksgiving - Thursday, Nov. 24
- Day after Thanksgiving - Friday, Nov. 25
- Christmas Eve - Friday, Dec. 23
- Christmas Day - Monday, Dec. 26
- New Year's Eve - Friday, Dec. 30
- New Year's Day - Monday, Jan. 2
- Memorial Day (Observed) - Monday, May 29
- Independence Day (Observed) - Tuesday, July 4
All offices will be open on Good Friday, April 14, and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4. All benefits-eligible staff will be issued two Religious or Personal Observance Days which will be added to their leave plans on January 1 of each year starting with January 1, 2017. Employees will have until December 31 of each year to use this time. Religious or Personal Observance Days may not be carried over to the next year; therefore, any unused hours will be deleted at the end of the calendar year.
Most offices will be closed Dec. 27, 28 and 29 as well.
We recognize and respect the expression of various cultures and faiths practiced among our faculty and staff. Although the university does not close in observance of holidays other than those listed above, reasonable accommodations will be made for faculty and staff who wish to observe other religious holidays in which they and their families honor. An example of a reasonable accommodation would be to use accrued leave.
When scheduling campus events, try to avoid conflicts with major religious holidays whenever possible. The following is a list of major holidays:
- Rosh Hashanah (Jewish) - Sundown, September 13-15
- Yom Kippur (Jewish) - Sundown, September 22-23
- Diwali (Hindu) - November 11
- Muharram (Islam) - Sundown, October 13-14
- Hanukkah (Jewish) - Sundown, December 6-14
- Kwanzaa (African) - December 26-January 1
- Passover (Jewish) - April 22
- Ramadan (Muslim) - Begins June 6
Jewish holidays begin at sundown the evening before (ex. Rosh Hashanah begins the evening of Sept. 24).
