Language Placement Instructions
for Incoming First-Year Students

In today’s interconnected world, language proficiency is essential.

Learning another language enhances both professional and personal growth, as it fosters intercultural understanding, allowing you to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and gain new perspectives on the world.

Recognizing the importance of language learning, Susquehanna University’s Central Curriculum requires all students complete at least two semesters of a foreign language. Please carefully review the following information to ensure you are placed in the appropriate language class.

If you have completed less than three years of a language and indicated on your registration sheet an interest in studying that language, you will automatically be given a 101 placement. Contact the Registrar’s Office to request a 101 placement if you are unsure which language you selected on your registration sheet.

If you have taken the equivalent of one to two years of a language, you may still take a placement assessment if you feel you could place above the 101 level.

Even if you have some prior language experience (equivalent of one to two years), you can still take a placement exam to potentially enroll in a higher-level course.

You are required to take a language placement assessment if you have completed the equivalent of three or more years of a language in high school and want to continue studying it at Susquehanna.

Language placements are only valid for two years. After that time, you will need to retake the placement assessment. Be sure to sign up for your language class as soon as possible.

Chinese or Italian Placement Assessment

If you have taken the equivalent of three (3) or more years of your selected language in Chinese or Italian (or one to two years but want to take a placement assessment), click on the appropriate link below.

NOTE: If your written responses place you above the language requirement, you will be contacted to set up a follow-up oral interview to make sure you are placed correctly.

French, German or Spanish Placement Assessment

If you have taken the equivalent of three (3) or more years of French, German or Spanish (or one to two years but want to take a placement assessment), click on the appropriate link below to take your placement test. You will be asked to create an account first. Please use your Susquehanna e-mail and student ID, if you already have those. If not, you may use your personal e-mail and simply insert your full name in the “student ID” box.

Note: If your results on the assessment place you out of the language requirement (any level above 102) and you do not wish to continue studying French, German or Spanish at Susquehanna, you will need to retake the placement exam on campus to ensure that you have been placed appropriately. Do the best you can by using only your current knowledge of the language.
