Jennifer Elick

We only have one planet that can sustain us and how we live, and yet many of us choose to live in the most unsustainable way. It's not that I'm looking for a soapbox from which to preach the virtues of green living, because there are some things that I do that may not be construed as green.  But as a geologist, I try to teach students in my classes how the earth operates; I try to provide them with the best instruction manual we have to date, knowing that if they understand the basics, they can potentially make the future a better place.

If we all try to be better about how we live and think of the impact we each make, then we may be able to lessen the damage to the environment. That's why, in my spare time, I try to volunteer in regional events to decrease the amount of trash we produce, and find efficient ways to recycle as much as possible.

I think a meaningful education is one that helps you understand the world around you, and I believe that Susquehanna provides a way for faculty to help students achieve this end. I always start my classes by saying, "This is the most important class of your college career..." and by the end of the semester, the students tend to understand why I make this claim!

We only have one planet that can sustain us, and if we understand it better, the future will be better.
