Valerie Martin

I grew up in a family that valued music and music is part of who I am. I began taking piano lessons when I was 5 and in sixth grade became involved in band, which I loved from the start. When I went to college, I pursued music education and psychology.

My career path shifted course during my junior year, when one of my professors suggested I apply for an International Rotary Scholarship. I landed the scholarship and spent a year studying music at the Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg, Austria. The experience changed the course of my life by furthering my interest in conducting, which led me to graduate school and eventually to Susquehanna as director of bands.

I distinctly remember my first visit to campus: it felt like home. I loved teaching and loved working with SU students. When I was approached about moving into administration, first as a department head, then as interim dean and eventually as dean and associate provost, I knew I'd miss the direct contact with students. But I've been invigorated by the challenges and opportunities afforded by these institutional roles.

It's been 21 years since I came to Susquehanna and I'm still in touch with some of the first students I encountered. They're in different parts of the world and, like me, some are pursuing things different than what they intended. It is always so good to hear from them! Interestingly, I find I am still a conductor of sorts, focused on helping others achieve their goals. It is a privilege to have this opportunity at Susquehanna!
