All in-person instruction will adhere to the recommendations established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the governor’s office, including:

  • Students must maintain a physical distance of 6 feet or more between others. (To accommodate required distancing, classroom capacities have been reduced.)
  • Students must wear a face covering to attend class in person.

Courses this fall will be delivered in a variety of ways in order to ensure a safe and engaging learning environment. This will include:

  • Classroom instruction, following public health guidelines for physical distancing.
  • Online instruction, using our upgraded technology.
  • Hybrid model, blending elements of in-person and online instruction.

Classroom Instruction

In some cases, faculty were able to move small classes to larger classrooms, allowing students who are studying on campus this fall to attend class in person with the required physical distance between students.

All classroom courses will also be available fully online for students who are studying remotely.

Hybrid Instruction 

In most cases, the reduced classroom capacity will mean that not all students can be physically present during a given class meeting time. These courses will incorporate an online component in addition to the classroom meetings. Courses with both classroom and online instruction — referred to as “hybrid” courses — will take on a variety of forms. Following are a few ways hybrid instruction may be implemented.*

  • Students rotate between classroom and online class attendance. For example, half of the students attend class in person on Tuesday, while the other half watches a live stream (synchronous participation) or watches a video recording later in the day (asynchronous participation).
  • All students engage in the same online learning experience throughout the week and, in smaller groups, attend in-person classes for instruction that requires active learning. For example, there may be several recorded videos that convey material normally shared in class, and two in-person meeting times — each accommodating one half of the class.
  • For each class session, all students attend in smaller groups that meet for a reduced portion of the time.

For example, if a class meets 90 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday, half of the class might attend for the first 45 minutes and the second half of the class might attend for the last 45 minutes. Note that this model still provides in-person instruction during each class session, but the meeting time is shortened to allow for fewer people in the room at a given time. The reduced in-person instruction time in the classroom would be supplemented by additional online learning experiences.

Note that these are examples provided to illustrate possible modes of hybrid instruction. Professors will be sharing the specific plans for each course.

All in-person components of hybrid courses will also be available fully online for students who are studying remotely.

Online Instruction

In some cases, faculty members will be teaching courses entirely online. In these instances, Susquehanna faculty will focus on delivering the material with the same level of personal attention and sense of community that is our tradition and strength.
