The summer months in the athletics department are usually a time for recovery, rest and recruiting–and a little quiet in Selinsgrove. That wasn’t the case this summer, as the department worked to fill key positions for the start of the fall season.
Crystal Gibson was hired for the newly created position of associate athletics director/compliance officer and senior woman administrator. She was hired with the help of an NCAA Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant, designed to offset the salary of the new position for three years. Gibson was the head women’s basketball coach and assistant athletics director at St. Mary’s College in Maryland before joining Susquehanna.
New head coaches for field hockey, cheerleading and women’s golf were also selected. Former Assistant Field Hockey Coach Allison Fordyce took the helm of the program, after a search revealed the best candidate for the job was right here on campus. Fordyce was the assistant for field hockey and women’s lacrosse for the past three years.
Sarah Markel was named the head coach for the cheerleading program. She was the head coach at Central Dauphin East High School, where she led the team to the district championship in the 2016-17 season.
Kevin Jamieson took over as head coach of the women’s golf program this fall, bringing a wealth of experience to the position. He was the head coach at neighboring Bucknell University for 16 years until stepping down at the end of last season to take on the role of club professional at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club.
