Susquehanna University concludes its 2016-17 Artist Series with a performance by the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Chanticleer on April 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” and “America’s favorite choral ensemble” by The New Yorker magazine, the San Francisco-based ensemble is celebrating its 39th season. Named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis A. Botto, who sang in the ensemble until 1989 and served as artistic director until his death in 1997.

Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for its “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its 12 male voices, ranging from soprano to bass, and its original interpretations of vocal literature from Renaissance to jazz and popular genres, as well as contemporary composition.

Chanticleer has developed a worldwide reputation for its impeccable musicianship, beauty of sound and wide-ranging repertoire. Named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008 and inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame the same year, Chanticleer began releasing recordings in 1981 and has sold well over a million albums and won two Grammys.

In its performance at SU, the group will present My Secret Heart, a musical exploration of a songwriter’s longing to penetrate the hidden places of the heart. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for non-Susquehanna students. For more information, please call 570-372-4354, or visit us at www.susqu.edu/artists.

The Artist Series, which dates back to 1902, brings internationally acclaimed artists and programs to Susquehanna University’s campus for the benefit of students, faculty, staff and members of the surrounding community. The aim of Artist Series performances is to advance intellectual engagement, often through master classes, lectures or content of the artistic presentation.
