November brings a theatre production, lectures, readings and a unique concert marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Martín Espada to Read from Poetry

Susquehanna’s programming related to this year’s academic theme of resilience continues with poet Martín Espada, who will read from his latest collection, Vivas to Those Who Have Failed.

The reading will take place in the Degenstein Center Theater at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1.

Espada has published nearly 20 books as a poet, editor, essayist and translator. He is a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Cheryl Ball Lectures on Digital Publishing and the Liberal Arts

Author and scholar Cheryl Ball will deliver the annual Publishing and Editing Lecture Digital Publishing and the Liberal Arts at Susquehanna University at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.

Ball is director of the Digital Publishing Collaborative at the Wayne State University Library.

Environmental Journalist to Speak on Keystone XL Pipeline

Travel and environmental author Ken Ilgunas will discuss his book, Trespassing Across America: One Man’s Epic, Never-Done-Before (and Sort of lllegal) Hike Along the Keystone XL Pipeline.

His lecture is at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5, in Meeting Rooms 1-5 in Degenstein Campus Center at Susquehanna.

One Hundred Years Later: Echoes of the Armistice

Susquehanna will pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I with the multimedia concert, One Hundred Years Later: Echoes of the Armistice, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.

Armistice Day is commemorated every year on Nov. 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I.

The evening will feature student translations of previously untranslated, French texts from WWI. Some of these translations will be set to music in original student compositions, while others will be by students and highlighted by original student artwork.

Student Singers Present Concert

The Susquehanna University Choir, Chamber Singers and University Chorale will perform in Stretansky Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9.

The University Choir and Chamber Singers are directed by Amy Voorhees, assistant professor of music. The University Chorale is directed by Judith White, adjunct professor of music.

Second Stage Presents Flint

Susquehanna’s Second Stage will present Flint at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Degenstein Center Theater.

Flint is a staged reading about the water crisis in Flint, Mich., and the lives of those affected.

The Second Stage features a collection of mostly student-generated productions focusing on bare-bones performances of challenging works in unconventional spaces

Musician-in-Residence Recreates ‘Scandal Concert’

Musician-in-residence Joy H. Calico will lead Susquehanna faculty and students through a public recreation of the infamous Viennese Scandal Concert of 1913.

The event, part of the Martha Barker Blessing Musicians-in-Residence Series, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.

The Scandal Concert was a performance of the Vienna Concert Society that ended in a brawl after the audience was shocked by the music’s atonality.

Calico is a professor of musicology at Vanderbilt University.

Campus, Community Come Together for Human Library

Susquehanna’s second Human Library will take place from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 400 N. Market St.

The Human Library is an event for anyone to become a “book” and share their story. The event promotes having positive, constructive conversations to allow people to exchange ideas and viewpoints.

Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble to Present Concerts

The Susquehanna University Orchestra, conducted by Gregory Grabowski, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18. The University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Joshua Davis, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30.

Both events will take place in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.
