During my sixth-grade year, my family lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, where everyone learned French in school, thanks to Mary Queen of Scots (she was born in France). For three months of that year, we traveled through Western Europe. Meeting so many people from all parts of society who spoke two or more languages inspired my ambition to become bilingual. Over the years, in addition to French, I studied linguistics, four other languages (to differing degrees), French literature, and culture studies, all in a quest to understand how language, ideas, creative work, values and worldviews fit together.
By now, I’ve also spent a total of about seven years in France, backpacking, picking grapes, working on restoration projects and a farm, plus studying and doing research. On each trip, my plan is to meet people, try local culinary specialties, learn more about people’s history, their way of life, and listen to how they see the world.
Perhaps crossing borders is what led to my enthusiasm for making connections in my work. I’m fascinated by the two decades between World Wars I and II. My approach to research is to delve into study of a cultural object like a world’s fair or a building or an advertisement or a song, to see what history, aesthetics, politics and ideas are contained there, and how they illuminate the mindset of an era. This approach requires sitting at the crossroads of multiple disciplines. In my work as a translator, I sit between the original text and a new reading public, with the hope of bringing them together. A great passion of mine, translation involves everything I’ve ever learned about language, literature and culture.
Language studies can take you in any direction and add new dimensions to any field, so French studies majors at Susquehanna are almost always double-majors who draw on interests from all over campus. My goal is to help students further their interests, both academic and personal, through the projects we work on. My own studies have always been intertwined with life: lived experiences lead me to ask questions in my studies; then my research makes me want to go out and live what I’ve learned. Intellectual adventures mean most to me when they connect to life. For this reason, we work on projects that are rooted in the “real” world, and often involve collaboration with other departments or off-campus entities. In this way, we use our growing language skills to deepen intercultural understanding.

About Me
During my sixth-grade year, my family lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, where everyone learned French in school, thanks to Mary Queen of Scots (she was born in France). For three months of that year, we traveled through Western Europe. Meeting so many people from all parts of society who spoke two or more languages inspired my ambition to become bilingual. Over the years, in addition to French, I studied linguistics, four other languages (to differing degrees), French literature, and culture studies, all in a quest to understand how language, ideas, creative work, values and worldviews fit together.
By now, I’ve also spent a total of about seven years in France, backpacking, picking grapes, working on restoration projects and a farm, plus studying and doing research. On each trip, my plan is to meet people, try local culinary specialties, learn more about people’s history, their way of life, and listen to how they see the world.
Perhaps crossing borders is what led to my enthusiasm for making connections in my work. I’m fascinated by the two decades between World Wars I and II. My approach to research is to delve into study of a cultural object like a world’s fair or a building or an advertisement or a song, to see what history, aesthetics, politics and ideas are contained there, and how they illuminate the mindset of an era. This approach requires sitting at the crossroads of multiple disciplines. In my work as a translator, I sit between the original text and a new reading public, with the hope of bringing them together. A great passion of mine, translation involves everything I’ve ever learned about language, literature and culture.
Language studies can take you in any direction and add new dimensions to any field, so French studies majors at Susquehanna are almost always double-majors who draw on interests from all over campus. My goal is to help students further their interests, both academic and personal, through the projects we work on. My own studies have always been intertwined with life: lived experiences lead me to ask questions in my studies; then my research makes me want to go out and live what I’ve learned. Intellectual adventures mean most to me when they connect to life. For this reason, we work on projects that are rooted in the “real” world, and often involve collaboration with other departments or off-campus entities. In this way, we use our growing language skills to deepen intercultural understanding.
