When I interviewed at Susquehanna in 2001, I felt that I was back home. I graduated in 1981 from St. Norbert College, a small, private, liberal arts college in De Pere, Wis. In my undergraduate experience I was challenged by caring faculty who took a personal interest in me both as a student and a person; the challenge they presented to me on a daily basis was for my betterment. I wanted to experience that same feeling, now from the other side of the desk; student interactions are, by far, the most enjoyable part of my teaching experience.

While I was a math major at St. Norbert, my most fulfilling and challenging, course was from Dr. Ken Zahorski; it was in Shakespeare during my junior year. I took the course to fulfill my literature requirement and Dr. Zahorski taught me not only how to write better, but also the importance of writing to make you a better thinker. He was “brutally honest” with his critique of my writing, but to this day, I have him to thank for not only making me a better writer, but a better teacher as well.

While I teach courses in information systems and management, I always try to fashion assignments that get students to write about their problem-solving process. I believe this makes them better, more critical thinkers. Thanks Dr. Zahorski. I appreciate the important lessons you taught me about the value of liberal arts education and thinking.
