Acclaimed St. Martin’s Press Executive Editor to Speak at Susquehanna
Published on April 5, 2013
Susquehanna University’s Visiting Writers Series will feature Elizabeth Beier, an acclaimed executive editor at St. Martin’s Press, on April 15 at 7:30 p.m. This event, held in Seibert Hall’s Isaacs Auditorium, is free and open to the public.
St. Martin’s Press, held by Macmillan, is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious publishers. Among the authors Beier has helped bring to public attention are Tom Perrota (“Little Children”), Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez (“The Dirty Girls Social Club”) and Susquehanna University’s own Glen Retief (“The Jack Bank”).
“Elizabeth Beier intimately knows the book publishing industry, where she regularly closes deals for both serious and popular titles,” said Glen Retief, associate professor of English and creative writing at Susquehanna. “One recent acquisition that drew industry attention was for “Lady Gaga: Critical Mass Fashion,” a new book featuring the pop-star’s fashion.”
During this event, Beier will address such topics as publishing as a career, industry changes in the era of the Internet and the e-book, and how students might go about finding publishers for their own creative work.
The 2012–13 Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by Susquehanna’s Writing Institute. The Writers Institute at Susquehanna is home to the university’s nationally recognized writing program. Visiting writers not only offer free readings to the public, but also devote time to lunches, classroom discussion and informal question-and-answer sessions with Susquehanna’s creative writing students, providing a uniquely intimate opportunity for learning and connecting with successful authors.
