Three honored with Gates Award for Leadership

Four people stand in front of an orange Susquehanna University backdrop, smiling at the camera. The group includes three men and one woman, all dressed in business or business-casual attire.

Three Susquehanna University staff members were recognized recently with the Signe S. Gates Appreciation Award — Amy Hazel, director of digital strategy; Kris Sauls, enterprise & data systems supervisor; and Devonne Tourre, facilities operations coordinator.

Established in 2006 by Signe S. Gates, chair of Susquehanna’s Board of Trustees and a graduate of SU, the award recognizes their outstanding contributions to the institution and acknowledges their dedication to advancing the university’s strategic objectives through extraordinary work performance that inspires others to reach for similar achievement.

Hazel was honored for leading Susquehanna’s website redesign. She has worked at Susquehanna since 2022.

“Amy served as the driving force behind this transformative project — one that touches every aspect of the university,” said Aaron Martin, vice president for marketing and communications at Susquehanna University. “Amy managed the full project lifecycle: facilitating broad campus engagement, overseeing an extensive content overhaul and ensuring the final design authentically reflected Susquehanna’s brand and mission.”

Sauls was described as “an indispensable member of the Information Technology team, demonstrating exceptional dedication, technical acumen, and a collaborative spirit. He has worked at Susquehanna since 2022.

“Kris is more than a technical expert — he is a valued campus partner. His ability to translate complex IT challenges into actionable solutions has made him a go-to collaborator for departments across SU,” said Jennifer Bucher, vice president for operations. “His work ensures that the university’s digital infrastructure not only meets today’s needs but is also prepared for tomorrow’s challenges.”

Tourre was honored for his leadership growth since joining the university as a staff member in 2022.

“Devonne has become a trusted partner across departments, known for his clear communication, proactive mindset and ability to guide others through change,” Bucher said. “What sets Devonne apart is not only his skillset but the way he uses it: with a focus on collective success, deep respect for others and a sincere desire to make SU a better place.”

Gates Award winners were honored at Susquehanna’s annual Opening Dinner.
