Students Celebrate Women’s Suffrage on Stage

The Department of Theatre will stage They Led the Way at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, to Saturday, Feb. 29, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1, in Weber Chapel Auditorium.

The performance will be an evening of one-act plays reflecting on the 100th anniversary of women voting in the U.S.

Ballet Company to Perform and Celebrate Mexican Heritage

The Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in Weber Chapel Auditorium.

Under the direction of Silvia Lozano, Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México is dedicated to spreading, preserving and promoting the culture of Mexico at home and abroad. Since 1960, it has collaborated with outstanding researchers and specialists of folklore, dance, music and costumes typical of the different regions of the Mexican republic.

Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México has performed in more than 30 countries on five continents, receiving countless recognitions and awards. Identifying itself as the ambassador of Mexican culture, the company has performed for royalty, presidents, prime ministers, ambassadors and more.

This performance is part of the Susquehanna University Artist Series.

Writers Institute Hosts Visiting Author

Author Zakes Mda will present a reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.

Mda is a novelist, playwright and professor at Ohio University, and has been a visiting professor at Yale and the University of Vermont.

Among his novels is The Heart of Redness (2002), which won the Richard Wright Zora Neale Hurston Legacy Award, and Little Suns (2015), which won the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize.

Mda is also the recipient of the Amstel Playwright of the Year Award (1978–79) and the Sunday Times fiction prize.

This reading is a part of Susquehanna’s Seavey Visiting Writers Series.

Seniors Present Work in Exhibition

The gallery exhibition for senior graphic design and studio art majors opens on Saturday, March 21, with an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Lore Degenstein Gallery in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center.

This annual exhibition showcases the accomplishments of Susquehanna’s graduating graphic design and studio art majors.

The exhibition will be open through April 5.

Visiting Lecturer to Explore Freedom and Inequality

Duquesne University’s Antony Davies will deliver the lecture Inequality, Poverty and Human Freedom at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 23, in the Benjamin Apple Meeting Rooms in the Degenstein Campus Center.

Davies’ lecture will explore the forces behind poverty and inequality, and how do they relate to freedom.

Davies is an associate professor of economics at Duquesne University. His research interests include econometrics, public policy and consumer behavior. Davies has authored more than 150 op-eds the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Forbes, Investor’s Business Daily, the New York Daily News and more. He is a frequent lecturer at policy conferences on Capitol Hill.
