Men’s Rugby Qualifies for National 7s Championships

Susquehanna’s men’s club rugby team will advance to the 7s National Championship after winning the qualifier tournament in Lancaster earlier this month.

The qualifying even was one of the eight nationwide qualifiers for the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) 7s National Championship.

Susquehanna defeated Neumann University 41-0 in their first game and University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown 14-0 in their second match. In their third match, they defeated Ithaca College 35 to 5. In their final match of the day, in quarterfinal action they defeated Babson College, which had finished fourth in last year’s National Championship by a score of 37 to 0.

In the semifinals, Susquehanna was matched against No. 5 nationally ranked Loyola University of Maryland. Susquehanna controlled the match on a cold and rainy morning, winning 17 to 5.

In the championship match, Susquehanna faced off against 2017 National 7s Championship runner-up St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Susquehanna took an early 5-to-0 lead into halftime and held on in the second half to clinch their birth to the 7s National Championship.

This is Susquehanna’s fifth trip to the NSCRO 7s National championships in the last six years, having finished third in 2016.

The NSCRO 7s National Championship will be held June 2-3 in conjunction with the Collegiate Rugby 7s Championships at Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia. Last year, over 27,000 fans attended the event.
