Susquehanna University’s Writers Institute — the hub for all things creative writing-related at SU — has many exciting opportunities for high school creative writers.

Come to Creative Writing Day for feedback on your poetry, fiction, and other creative writing. Apply to our creative writing major and win one of our eleven scholarships to study creative writing at Susquehanna. Attend our summer workshop for high school writers. Email us to join our mailing list for invitations to free creative writing workshops and events.
Creative Writing Scholarships
Ten Janet Weis Scholarships of $5,000 each will be offered to first-year creative writing majors based upon the quality of their writing portfolio. The Bundy Scholarship may also be offered to first-year creative writing major based upon the quality of their writing portfolio if funds are not committed to a current student recipient. These scholarships are offered in addition to any academic merit scholarships received. Combined Susquehanna scholarships will not exceed the cost of tuition.
Janet Weis and Bundy Scholarships are renewable for a total of four years as long as the recipient is enrolled full-time as a creative writing major and maintains a 3.2 grade point in the major.
Candidates are encouraged to submit portfolios of 5-10 pages within two weeks of applying to the university, but no later than Feb. 15.

Apprentice Writer
This digital magazine publishes poems, stories and personal essays by high school students from schools throughout the nation. It has a circulation of 11,000 and is distributed each September. It is edited and produced, in part, by Susquehanna writing students.

Writers Workshop
Featuring workshops in fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction, Susquehanna’s Summer Writers Workshop was selected as a “Best Value in Summer College Programs” by Early College Programs and named one of the 500 best summer programs in the world by Princeton Review.
Experienced writers entering 10–12 grades in the fall of 2025 are eligible to attend the 2025 Summer Writers Workshop. Participants will be required to submit a writing portfolio containing 3–5 pages of any creative writing in any genre; fiction, poetry, memoir, journalism or plays, as part of the registration process.
