Checklist for International Students

Before you arrive, follow your pre-arrival checklist:

  1. Request your immigration documents and pay the SEVIS fee
  2. Apply for your F-1 or J-1 visa
  3. Submit visa documents to Susquehanna
  4. Pay your Susquehanna University deposit (if applicable)
  5. Complete your housing and course registration forms
  6. Plan travel to campus
  7. Check in with International Student Services
F & J Immigration Process

F Visa Holder

Please visit the international admissions page to submit your required materials. Do not schedule an interview at your local U.S. Embassy or Consulate until you have received an official acceptance letter from Susquehanna University and your original I-20. If you have questions, contact the admissions counselor for your region.

J Visa Holder

  1. Be nominated by your home institution to attend Susquehanna University for a semester or academic year
  2. After the International Student Services coordinator contacts you, submit all required documents and forms including:
    • DS-2019 request form
    • Exchange Student Application
    • A color copy of your valid passport
    • Official English proficiency test results
  3. Once your materials are received, an official acceptance letter and signed DS-2019 will be created and mailed to the address you provided on the DS-2019 request form. You will also receive digital copies by email
  4. Schedule a visa appointment at your local U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Before your appointment, make sure you have your DS-2019 and have paid the SEVIS and visa application fees. Print and keep your SEVIS fee receipt
  5. After receiving your visa or if your visa is denied, contact the International Student Services coordinator with the result. If approved, please email a color copy of your visa

Orientation for International Students

Held each August and January, orientation prepares you for life at Susquehanna and in the United States. You will:

  • Meet other international students and mentors
  • Review visa and immigration requirements
  • Finalize your course schedule with your academic advisor
  • Learn about health, safety and campus life

English Language Learners Program

Need to strengthen your English before beginning coursework? Our English Language Learners (ELL) program helps prepare you for academic success.


Working on Campus

Eligible international students can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic year. To work, you must:

  • Hold valid F-1 or J-1 visa status
  • Be enrolled full-time and in good academic standing
  • Obtain a Social Security number
  • Receive written approval from International Student Services

J-1 exchange students typically cannot work off-campus unless they experience unexpected financial hardship. Contact us for guidance.


Maintaining Your Visa Status

To stay in legal status as an F-1 or J-1 student, you must:

  • Keep your I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) valid
  • Update your address within 10 days of moving
  • Report changes to your program, such as major or degree level
  • Keep your passport valid and share a copy when renewed

Violating these rules may result in loss of visa status. Contact International Student Services with any questions. We’re here to help.

Visa Guidelines: F-1 vs. J-1 Students

F-1 Visa Students
  • Must maintain full-time enrollment (12+ credits) and make normal academic progress
  • On-campus work allowed (up to 20 hours/week)
  • Eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and employment based on economic hardship (with approval)
  • Must carry valid passport, visa, and I-20
  • 60-day grace period after graduation
J-1 Visa Students
  • Must study full-time and be in good academic standing
  • On-campus work allowed with written approval
  • Off-campus work allowed only through Academic Training or in emergencies
  • Must carry valid passport, visa, and DS-2019
  • No standard grace period — check with your international advisor

Travel Guidelines

Travel Within the U.S.: No special documents required.
Travel Outside the U.S.: You’ll need your:

  • Valid passport
  • U.S. visa (F-1 or J-1)
  • Signed I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1)
  • Proof of enrollment and financial support (recommended)

After completing your program, F-1 students have a 60-day grace period to travel in the U.S. or prepare for next steps. Refer to the U.S. State Department for official guidance.
