Freshwater Research Institute

Helping to restore & protect the Susquehanna River watershed

Real-World Experience Starts Here

At the Freshwater Research Institute, undergraduate students gain invaluable real-world experience as the next generation of environmental leaders. Through hands-on research, collaborations with state agencies and non-profits, and the application of classroom knowledge, students build a strong foundation for careers in freshwater research, conservation and restoration.

Lead the Way in Freshwater Research

Students develop critical thinking, environmental stewardship and professional skills while conducting research alongside faculty and staff scientists. This collaborative environment provides opportunities for students to lead research projects, contribute to scientific publications and help drive innovation.

Freshwater REsearch Possibilities

“The next generation of scientists need hands-on learning opportunities like those I enjoy today at Susquehanna.” – Danielle Tryon ’24

The Freshwater Research Institute provides opportunities for students to engage in cutting-edge research and field experience on freshwater ecosystems with faculty mentors.

Stream Ecology Institute for High School Students

At this weeklong summer institute, high school students explore how a fish, an insect, algae and even an old tire influence and affect each other in a continuum — from small streams to large rivers. You’ll engage in learning experiences about the environment and long-term ecological studies, and explore career options in science and ecology.

Center for Environmental Education & Research (CEER)

Where Research, Learning & Service Come Together

At Susquehanna, sustainability is central, and the CEER embodies this commitment. Students engage in hands-on experiences like beekeeping, sheep care, watershed research and tree planting — all within the rich natural environment surrounding the Susquehanna River.
