Support for Pregnant & Parenting Students
Through guidance by the Department of Education, Title IX Educational Amendments of 1972 that prohibit discrimination based on gender were expanded in 1975 to also include pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, miscarriage, abortion and other related conditions.
Pregnant and parenting students are guaranteed equal access to all educational activities and programs, including classes, labs, athletics, clubs, organizations and the same academic accommodations available to anyone with a temporary disability or medical condition.
Reasonable Modifications & Academic Accommodations
Under Title IX, students are entitled to reasonable modifications and academic accommodations like housing adjustments, excused absences, class breaks or alternative learning options (under certain circumstances).
The Title IX Office helps students understand their rights and connects them with resources, like the Center for Academic Success for temporary disability accommodations. Students can access a variety of reasonable modifications, such as those outlined in the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting students policy.
