Department of Theatre Presents Doubt, A Parable
John Patrick Shanley’s drama Doubt, A Parable will be performed at Susquehanna University’s Degenstein Center Theater at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20-22 and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23.
Set in 1964 in a New York City Catholic school, the play tells the story of principal Sister Aloysius, who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects a young priest of improper relations with a male student.
Tickets can be purchased through the box office in the Degenstein Center Theater lobby. The box office is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday when classes are in session. Tickets can be purchased in person or by calling 570-372-ARTS. Senior and student rates are available.
Lecture Focuses on Resilience
Derrick R. Brooms, faculty member in sociology and Africana studies at the University of Cincinnati, will present a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in Weber Chapel Auditorium.
Brooms will discuss Being Black, Being Male on Campus: Understanding and Confronting Black Male Collegiate Experiences, his 2017 book from which an excerpt appears in this year’s Common Reading for first-year students.
Bandleader to Present Concert
Trombonist and bandleader Chris Washburne will present a concert in Susquehanna University’s Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28.
The concert is the first performance in The Martha Barker Blessing Musicians-in-Residence Series, now in its fifth year at Susquehanna. Established by Martha “Marty” Blessing, an alumna and 40-year former employee of the university, the series brings distinguished musicians to campus for workshops, master classes, rehearsals and performances.
Innovative Poet to Present Reading
Acclaimed poet Brenda Hillman will read from a selection of her works as part of the Seavey Reading Series at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24 in Weber Chapel Auditorium at Susquehanna University.
Hillman has published 10 collections of poetry, all from Wesleyan University Press. In her latest, EXTRA HIDDEN LIFE, AMONG THE DAYS (2018), she demonstrates how poetry builds beauty from grief and understanding from the magical.
Students Present 24-Hour Play Festival
The Department of Theatre will present its 24-Hour Play Festival at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in Isaacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall.
The festival showcases student teams who conceptualize, write, rehearse and perform exciting new short works in the span of a single day.
